What happens at an evaluation

Five steps, in one visit.

We talk firstWhere you lose the thread, and when you started noticing it. Restaurants and grandchildren come up a lot.
We examine your earsThe ear canal and eardrum, before anything is measured. Occluding wax is a common cause of muffled hearing, and a fixable one.
We measureTones across the frequencies that carry speech, and how well you make out words at conversational volume, so the result reflects conversation rather than a chart.
We go through the resultsYou see your own audiogram, which frequencies the loss affects and how far, and what that means for the rooms you are actually in.
We tell you what we would doIncluding when the answer is to wait and check again next year.

When it is worth getting tested.

If you are turning the television up, asking people to repeat themselves, or finding restaurants harder than they used to be, that is reason enough. So is someone close to you mentioning it before you have.

If you do need hearing aids, here is how we find the right one

Do I need an appointment for a hearing test?+
Yes. A full evaluation takes real time and we would rather give it the time it deserves than fit you in between walk-ins.
What should I bring?+
A list of any medications, any previous hearing test results you have, and your hearing aids if you already wear some. If someone close to you can come along, bring them too. They often notice things you have stopped noticing.
Will I be told I need hearing aids?+
Only if you do. Some people come in and learn their hearing is fine, or that the problem is wax. You will get a straight answer either way.
I have ringing in my ears. Is that worth testing?+
Yes. Ringing, hissing, or buzzing with nothing outside the ear making it often comes alongside hearing loss, so a hearing test is the place to start. Ringing that begins suddenly, affects one ear only, or arrives with dizziness should be looked at promptly and may need a physician. There is no universal cure for tinnitus, but there are management options that help, and hearing aids with masking built in are one of them.
How often should I have my hearing tested?+
Treat it like an eye exam. Once a year is reasonable for most adults, and sooner if something has changed or people are telling you they repeat themselves.
